Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cinema therapy on the stress response and the coping methods of female inmates. Five-session cinema therapy which was developed and revised through preliminary study was administered to four group of female inmates during three months. The Stress Response Inventory scores and the Ways of Coping Checklist scores of 14 female inmates who participated in all five sessions of cinema therapy were compared with those of 14 in control group. Results were as followed. Compared to control group, cinema therapy showed significant decrease on the somatization sub-scale score of the Stress Response Inventory and problem avoidance factor score, wishful thinking factor score and emotionally focused coping factor score of the Ways of Coping Checklist after cinema therapy. Results of this study suggested that cinema therapy could be a method to encourage female inmates to cope actively and realistically. After cinema therapy, participants reported that they could expand their understanding on themselves and others owing to program. This study also suggested group therapy using cinema could give them positive influence on social adaptation after their discharge as well as resolution of stresses from imprisonment.
